Childrens Understanding Of The Earth Essay - 845 Words

The origin and improvement of scientific knowledge can be discovered by investigating children’s understanding of the earth. (Panagiotaki, et al, 2006) By interpreting everyday experience, children initially believe that the earth is a flat object. Some think that our earth is flat and rectangular while others assume that it is flat and shaped like a disc. Then, during the process of knowledge acquirement, children are exposed to the socially accepted knowledge that the Earth is spherical. Nonetheless, because of the influence of intuitive constraints, they make an attempt to constantly review presuppositions in order to adjust their original models to enable them to be more consistent with the more logical models, thus forming synthetic†¦show more content†¦Straatemeier et al (2008) states that age is a crucial foreteller and children aged 10 and above gain an extensive amount of the earth’s scientific knowledge. This is due to the fact that when children get older, they will have more scientifically correct knowledge of the earth, think more abstractly and perform more theoretically. In short, older children are more likely to gain a better scientific understanding of the earth’s shape and younger children have a tendency to give different responses across all of the mental models of the earth. Besides, children’s understanding of the form of the earth is associated significantly with gender differences. It is indicated that boys are believed to be better at scientific knowledge, including the understanding of the structure of our earth than girls. Straatemeier (2008) argues that the boys are supposed to have a considerably higher consistency mark as did the girls. (0.60 and 0.18 respectively) In addition to that, it is suggested that males have the wider knowledge of scientific problems than females. Hayes (2001) states that when working in a group, males are likely to be more confident and informative than their female peers while mentioning scientific matters.
