I. Etiology of Nonverbal encyclopedism Disorder (NVLD)
In the of late 1970’s, Myklebust and Rourke believed they had identified a new type of learning disability. They set in motion children with math disabilities who also displayed low functioning nonverbal and visuospatial abilities, pitiable psychomotor functioning, and problems with peer relations. Nonetheless, their grammatical expression abilities and vocabulary using were proficient. By the late 1980’s, Rourke identified these children as having Nonverbal Learning Disability Syndrome (Silver, 2007; Cooley, 2002).
The condition known as Nonverbal Learning Disability or Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NVLD) is believed to be a neurological dysfunction of the brain’s pay hemisphere (Burger, 2004). The hemispheres of the brain consists of white matter, the brain’s circuitry, which allows data to be processed by connecting various centers of the brain. There is to a greater extent white matter in the right hemisphere than in the left (Nldontheweb.org, 2009).
Rourke’s “White Matter Model” hypothesizes that impairments in the right hemisphere lead to problems with visual-spatial abilities, executive functions, and overall impact (Keller, 2006; Vacca, 2001).
Since Myklebust’s and Rourke’s “discovery,” there has not been consensus about the genius of this disability (Nlda.org, 2009). Is this this “new disability” actually a close to different manifestation of another disability, particularly Asperger‘s?
NVLD has been associate to other disabilities (Tuller, 2007). Kids with Turner Syndrome and hyperlexia often have NVLD symptoms (hyperlexia.org, 2009; Pennington, 2008).
